This art show inspires awe
and some disgust
Mumbai : ''Having problems in the bedroom?" Not an advertisement for a sexologist's clinic but one of the lines of text present in multimedia installations buy artists sanjeev Khandekar and Vaishali Narkar that opened at the Jehangir art gallery at Kala Ghoda on Tuesday. The exhibition is titled 'Tits n Clit n Elephant Dick'.

On Tuesday afternoon, a few shy-looking young men, students of the J J School of Art, wandered around the exhibits, which included paintings in acrylic depicting depressed-looking nude figures juxtaposed with internet pages showing email inboxes; small boxed tableaux and two installations showing a sort of hotel reception desk manned by a naked, life-size mannequin (weraring a tie) with cubby-holes behind him fillmed with more, smaller nude dolls.

Khandekar and Narkar said the Jehangir Management had not demurred about anything in the content or title of the exhibitionn, which they booked around three years ago. ''The whole exhibition is an installation, which represents the commercialistaion of everything today,'' said Khandekar. The two had collaborated on all the work being shown, although Khandekar has no formal training in art while Narkar holds a Master's degree from the J J School of Art.

''Freud said civilisation resulted from the repression of man's unconscious desires, which had to be expressed in other forms. But now the unconscious is coming out,'' said Khandekar. In this Vision, the internet acts as a repository for a gamut of possible fantasies and nightmares, from pornography to matrimonial sites. The imagery of both is used in the exhibition.

And the response so far? Comments in the visitors' book ranged from ''Quite disgusting! A waste of talent'' to the almost creepily enthusiastic: ''Disconcerting, but then the primordial howl always is''.

Art gallery owner Pravina Mecklai, however, was dismissive. ''How sensationalist can you get? It's pure nonsense. I don't even intend to see it because I was so put off by the title,'' she said of the exhibition. ''This sort of thing is so passe in art-but perhaps the artists feel it is new to India,'' she added.
