From a purely aesthetic point of view of I am not impressed. In my opinion, the intent is to shock. I preferred Khandekar;s last exhibition. |

I do not support censorship of any sort and I totally support the artist. In such a situation, however, I think it is art that always suffers. For instance Narendra Yadav was showing his crisp installations at the Museum Art Gallery around the same as sanjeev and the latter's works have received all the attention because of this censorship hullabaloo. I think that is unfair.

SINCE AN artist exists within the bounds of a society, you have two options. The first: you must keep the sentiments of society in mind. The second: if you wish to exercise your artistic freedom, you must be prepared to face the consequences. I do appreciate Sanjeev's gesture of protest in covering up his works rather than close the exhibition. That said, my stand has always been that there should be no censorship of artists and their works. I was not personally shocked by the works; in fact I enjoyed the exhibition. But I think individuals who are uninitiated in art might find the works objectionable.

I, for one, found the title unnecessarily provocative and decided against going to the exhibition. The artist is not forcing anyone to see the exhibition. So I don't think censoring an exhibition is the job of either the police other viewer. It is entirely up to the artist and the Gallerist; it is their prerogative. |
