Let's not be judgmental about which show was the best, since the good and bad in art is so subjective. I would like to look at the most unusual exhibition of the year. That for me would be Sanjeev Khandekar's show La Peau de Chagrin (Who is afraid of the shrinking skin...!) at Pundole Art Gallery. It's interesting since it comes from a very surprising entity...Khandekar is not an established artist, yet he brought new thoughts to the field and has done an installation that is far more sophisticated in execution and concept than many know 'young' artists who have received awards abroad. His attention to detail is what I was impressed with where each insect was done so meticulously. And the plaster cast of him self is vulnerable and raw. It allowed you to understand and empathise with the protagonist in a manner that is candid and honest as well as moving.

SYNOPSIS:

The show addressed man's constant fear of his own mortality and how this fear leads him to turn to artifice. But rather than explore that artificiality like most artist Khandekar has chosen to address fear.
